Welcome everyone to this weeks #SportsVizSunday round-up. I just managed to catch the end of the spurs chelsea game and wow, what a game! Sadly spurs left it a little to late with their third to claw back a point.
I have to admit I am a bit of a Cole Palmer super fan. More so, when he is in an England shirt of course, but genuinely think he stands out in most games he plays in.
Cole Palmer now has 50 goal involvements (33 goals, 17 assists) in 48 Premier League games for Chelsea; only Erling Haaland for Man City (39), Andy Cole for Newcastle (43), and Mo Salah for Liverpool (46) have ever reached 50 in fewer PL games for a club. Audacious. - Opta.
I came across two awesome soccer pieces this week.
The first from Oluwadunsin Agbolabori (@dunsinagb) who looks at the performance comparison of Ruben Amorim's move to united.
Really appreciate the shout out to the template, and great to see it applied to well to Rubens stats indirectly. We've seen a huge uptick in sports analysis being used as part of the punditary now - which has been pleasing to see. Globally helping people see and understand data through sports.
The second piece I came across was on Linkedin from Javier. Javier creddits the soccermatics course in helping him understand some of the dynamics behind Inter Milans champions league final.
It's always a delight when someone shares not just the final output, and story behind the data, but also how to get there. Thanks for the code snippets Javier.
Check out this piece from Scott that has a deep dive into FPL stats for each week.... with some pretty creative names. A wonderful blend between tracking stats, but with a "business" dashboard style and feel to it. Definitely one to flick through the 4 different tabs on.
Looks like the FPL API could be of interest to others!
Set pieces really are arsenals jam. Aurel looks at how many expected chances Arsenal create from their corners.
A few non soccer vizs this week. Though some may still call this next one football.
Whitney looks at the sheer number of texas high scools with football teams and where they rank. Aptly named "Friday Night Lights" with the brightness of the green against the black map backdrop.
Surely you all know Lev by now? He really doesnt miss when it comes to sports content. I honestly could probably just showcase just his X page one week as the full round up. This one on athlete pay by gender particularly stuck out to me, namely due to the stark difference that tennis is the money maker in the womens side.
I seemingly can't embed the post but I came across this spectacular design from Paul this week on Olympic bids. Let's just say the Olympics isn't the most profitable thing to host, and besides the left over benefits of transport links and sports facilities, it is often a huge cost to a country to fund. No wonder we have seen a fall in bids over the years!
The last "visual" this week I wanted to include for the art of storytelling. Bryson DeChambeau, the U.S. Open champion, captivated golf fans with his ambitious 16-day challenge to hit a hole-in-one over his house, achieving the feat in just over two weeks despite the astronomical odds. SportsBall perfectly draws this out, taking you along the sporting journey.
Finally....
Spoiler alert, 1 F1, 1 soccer, 1 Tableau Training, 1 Sports finance, 1 boxing, and 1 archery visual made it into our favourites from November. Check out who and why in the video below. A great array of different sports on offer!
