Welcome one and all to the 1st of December and our weekly #sportsvizsunday round-up. Wishing you all safe extractions of Christmas decorations from lofts and attics and enjoyable advent calendar chocolates. More pertinent to our blog, however, is that December brings much excitement to the world of sport, too. The football season, packed with games, really begins to take shape (when does “it’s only the beginning of the season, I don’t look at the table”, turn into the serious part of the campaign?!) and is there anything better than going to watch football on Boxing Day, against local rivals perhaps, after spending much of Christmas Day inside.
There's plenty more going on besides and while we have a shorter round-up this week, we do have some great designs to showcase. Let’s get to it.
We start with F1 and a couple of cracking designs. First up, Dan Wade attempts to answer the unanswerable question: Who’s the greatest driver of all time? What I love about Dan’s design is he has provided a number of different data points in a couple of different forms and lets the user decide for themself. While it seems clear that Lewis Hamilton is ‘the GOAT’ based on the evidence in front of us, there is so much more that can be added to the conversation. And that is why, I guess, we keep coming back to it for debate. Great job, Dan!
Every so often, a viz comes across our desks that combines simplicity, tremendous eye-catching elements and encapsulates a story brilliantly. Anastasiya does just that with her career index plot of F1 driver Max Verstappen’s wins. I love the use of just one colour which instantly connects us with the title and the wins below. Just looking at the last 4-years in particular shows the dominance of Verstappen over this period of time. Fantastic!
Turning to football now, this lovely-looking line chart from Tedy Iskandar tracks the evolution of the Indonesia national team's FIFA world ranking over the past 6 years. It’s clear there’s considerable improvement taken place and a lot of that, as Tedy points out, must be attributable to coach Shin Tae-yong. Nice one, Tedy!
If you thought tables were boring, then I challenge you to check this out (via LinkedIn) from Damola Lapipo. Taking a look at the Champion’s League, Damola has crafted this amazing interactive table featuring all 36 teams with facts, stats, form guides and more. It’s an incredible design and well worth diving into.
A fair distance across the world in New Zealand, England are currently demonstrating good cricketing skills with their recent win over the Kiwis. If you’re looking to up your cricket viz game then check out this fantastic resource from Yash Sakhuja who walks us through gathering info from the ESPN Cricinfo site via the ever-useful blog of CJ Mayes. Thanks, Yash!
That’s it for this week, stay safe, enjoy the Christmas build-up and keep vizzing!
