Get ready for another exciting edition of the Sports Viz Sunday showcase! This week's roundup features an impressive array of visual designs. Let's jump straight into the highlights!
If you weren't aware, its Iron Viz season, and with a topic of entertainment, Rebecca chose to visualise the contrast between the NFL excitment and how injury prone the sport is. It dominates both the international market and american entertainment. As someone who doesn't watch huge amounts of american football, the NFL positioning with injury count on marks size works really well to visualise the most concerning positions (corner backs, wide receivers, line backers)
Liam Henshaw is a fan favourite for his football content, often offering advice to those wanting to get into the data analytics community. One thread he shared I thought would be beneficial was a summary of some of the talks from Statsbomb 2024, all on Youtube.
The idea of accuracy vs speed comes into play from this visual from Gerald. Accuracy in this case, measured as the distance from the side / centre line. Quite interesting to see Carlos fall below the average for both of these. Mpetshi sticks out like a sore thumb with an average 1st serve speed over 215km/h. That's an AVERAGE ... wow.
I know this is ATP 24 data, but would love to know where Nick Kyrgios would sit amongst this.
We don't normally put broadcaster visualisations in the round-ups, but wanted to include this visual from sky sports that looks at "net total goals" overturned by VAR.
The thread offers good discussion points around ref favouring them during the game to lead to incorrect decisions, decisions that were controversial, and the effectiveness of VAR in general.
To close out this week, I saw this wonderful BallonDor visual from Dimitris on Linkedin. A well organised poster feel with the cartoon graphics at the top and badges to compliment. The BallonDor has in past years favoured more attacking positions, whether intentional or not. Even though it is measured on 1) Individual performances, decisive and impressive character; 2) Team performances and achievements; 3) Class and fair play.
Check out some of the stats around win percentages, competitions won as well as G/A.
That's all for this week! Wishing you a restful Sunday & a good week ahead.
