Weekly Roundup 07.21.2024

I think I've just about recovered from the end of the Euros last weekend. Spain were worthy winners and I was very pleased to see England make a good account of themselves, especially in the second half. Overall I felt that this had been a good Euro Championships but that seems to be the minority opinion! I've got a visualisation idea to compare a few metrics to see if this was an entertaining tournament or if I just remembered the good bits, so watch this space!

The #SportsVizSunday community has been visualising some good bits this week so let's dive straight in!

Jules Claeys has created a great "business-style" dashboard looking at the performance of the Vancouver Canucks in the NHL this season. I really like how Jules has used a lot of graph types that are more often seen in business/financial dashboards but repurposed them here for performance metrics. In particular, the BANs and bullet charts on the team page are very effective at showing performance this season compared with last season, and the comet charts showing the change between regular season and playoffs are a clever way of comparing the two different phases. Very stylish all round Jules!

A regular to these pages, Dan Wade has taken a brief break from his F1 visualisation challenge to look at Novak Djokovic's Grand Slam tennis career. I think Dan's use of country outlines to show each tournament adds an enjoyable level of detail here. As Dan highlights, Djokovic's Australian Open performance is incredible having won 10 tournaments between 2008 and 2023. I hadn't realised just how long Djokovic's Grand Slam winning career had been, or that he had won as many Wimbledon titles as he had. Remarkable!

Sticking with tennis, and anyone who has watched Carlos Alcaraz recently may have had the feeling they were watching someone rather special. Lev Akabas agrees and has used an incredibly effective table to show that the age of Alcaraz may be upon us. Lev has a great gift for being able to create striking visuals from very simple tables of text and icons and this is a very strong example.

Rounding up the visualisations this week is Edit Gyenge's elegant and interactive look at the Romanian men's national football team, and in particular their historic Golden Generation compared to their current Soul Generation. My favourite element is the pentagon/football representation of the Romanian team performance at each Euro championship. It's really striking and the colours are beautiful. Check it out!

I mentioned the end of the Euros earlier, and Statsbomb have released all their data for the tournament! This is an unbeatable source of information and a great opportunity to practise some new techniques (or have a go at copying some of the analysis that has become commonplace in football over the last few years).

Last but not least this week is something a little bit different - a podcast! It's not a visualisation but it is related to sport stats. Roger Federer hit the headlines recently following his revelation that he "only" won 54% of the points he played. BBC's More or Less did a dive into the detail which you can find here.

And that's it for this week! The Olympics kick off on Friday and I'm looking forward to a host of Olympic visualisations later in the year (and I've no doubt I will create one or two myself).
