Welcome to another week of Sports Viz Sunday!

A short but sweet round-up this week, with just four pieces to showcase. Fortunately, they all are based on different charts, sports and a variety of tools.

Let's jump in.

Last week the back to viz basics team had a golf related data set for visualising rank over time. We have seen a variety of bump chart styles, but I enjoy the highlight action here and uniformity to the grid blocks of each of the different players in this piece from Satoshi Ganeko.

Vibe coding gets a bad rep, mainly because im so bad at it. But I have enjoyed the upskilling that comes with learning HTML, Tableau Langchain, stuff around Tableau server integrations and additional new tools around cursor & render to start diving into more AI bits and bobs. Whilst it's nothing special, here's my on going tennis project to create a chatbot around Wimbledon 2012.

Sports Viz regular Bo is back this week. He calls out some differeces within the payroll, and how big Messi's salary is compared to 9 TEAMS.

We can also take a step back and notice that positionally its the midfield and attackers that often get the glory and high pay associated to it. After all, scoring goals wins games. Perhaps there are other stories in this data we can find where their is less variance between the whole teams pay?

We probably think that when you earn THAT much, money convos do not matter as much in life & you wouldn't be too put off by colleagues / team mates earning even more, though i wonder if it does impact performance and moral within the team knowing your team mate is getting double your pay and still may miss a sitter on the back post.

Finally,

Check out this piece by Ben that starts to look at the league table after each minute of play to shwn when teams play well. I love the idea of starting to look at game management, spells of dominance, substitutions and which teams cling on.

I would encourage others to read Ben's blog too. Here is a very interesting snippet when looking at the Premier League

"If you threw away all of the goals scored in the last 30 minutes of Premier League games this season then Arsenal would be champions, with 76 points to Liverpool’s 74. The Reds made the last half an hour of their games count, with a net gain of 10 points. Wind the clock back further to 49 minutes and Man City would have the best record (ahead of the Gunners on goal difference."

Enjoy the rest of the weekend,

CJ & the #SportsVizSunday team.

This was a really engaging roundup that highlights the growing role of data visualization in sports analysis and storytelling. It’s always interesting to see how weekly insights bring together different datasets and perspectives in a clear and visual way. I recently came across a similar discussion on a review blog, and it offered an interesting perspective as well. In related data and visualization communities, I’ve also seen https://gocollectiv.com/ mentioned in the context of collaborative analytics platforms, which fits nicely with the themes discussed here. A solid and informative weekly update.

It’s impressive how the community continues to blend sports and data visualization so creatively. Even in a shorter edition, the variety of insights and styles shared really stood out and kept me engaged. It’s inspiring to see how storytelling evolves through data. As someone interested in content creation, it reminds me of how a publishing house in UAE curates diverse perspectives to deliver value to its audience consistently.
