It’s (mostly) been an incredible week for British teams in the European Cup football competitions. Arsenal showed that the first leg victory was no fluke with another professional performance against Real Madrid, Spurs got a win away from home against Eintracht Frankfurt, and Manchester United were involved in one of the most remarkable scenes of all time by the sound of it! Must be some future visualisation material there...

On the subject of remarkable scenes, this week saw the deadline for Chelsea FC’s Insights Vizathon and I saw lots of great entries from the #SportsVizSunday community. Here’s a rundown of a few of them , with one thing about each that stood out to me.

In no particular order, Rob is up first. I thought his collapsible menu on the physical performance tab was really slick, and that tab looked very elegant.

Next, Zak Saucede created a watch face as well as mobile dashboard. This is an inspired idea as wearables are becoming more and more integrated with elite sport.

Nick van Lieshout is up next and he has used colour in a very effective way to draw attention to the important information without sacrificing the breadth of information available.

A quick entry from Jordan Pickles on LinkedIn too - I really like the Readiness to Perform section in Jordan's dashboard. This helps turn the data into some actionable insights.

And finally, here is my entry. I wanted to create a dashboard that was more for player engagement rather than coach decision making, which is what led to my stripped back FIFA/Championship Manager-inspired mobile design.

Moving away from football for a little while, Rory McIlroy's career grand slam continues to inspire some fantastic visualisations.

Ben Norland has treated us to a look through Rory's personal journey to winning the Masters. It really stands out how much Rory had to make-up after a slow start, but once he got rolling then it was difficult to stop him! I like how much information Ben has encoded for each hole in this viz but without cluttering the design.

Sticking with golf, and the first of Scott Barber's two visualisations this week is this racing line chart showing how McIlroy, Rose and DeChambeau fared throughout the tournament. This choice really emphasises how often the lead changed hands and allows the overall narrative to shine. Simple but effective! Again, it really stood out to me that McIlroy had left himself a mountain to climb but managed it in style.

And that isn't the only racing graph in this week's roundup. Jacob Rothemund has created a racing bar chart for the Chinese Grand Prix. I love this idea - yet another clever use of animation in Tableau! - because it captures the movement of the race really well. Jacob has also added extra details around the tyre and whether each racer has increased their fastest lap or not. This last element really elevates this visualisation because it adds so much context to the movement of the bars even when the racers don't overtake anyone.

Returning back to football, and also returning back to Scott Barber who has created a great network map for the #30DayChartChallenge. This network map captures the connection between managers and clubs in the Premier League. I could spend hours looking at this, and managed to find lots of connections that I'd forgotten about (Mourinho at Manchester United!). I recommend having a play with the interactive version.

I'm going to round off this week with some celebratory news, which is that two Tableau sports vizzes were selected in Information is Beautiful's 2024 shortlist for Leisure, Games & Sport! Congratulations to Emmanuella Tudome and our very own CJ Mayes!

Forbes Highest Paid Athletes - Emmanuella Tudome

The Golden Set - CJ Mayes

And that's everything for this week. Thanks for all your entries, and keep on vizzing!
