I am writing this week's round-up in the clubhouse of my local tennis club. I regularly play but today it's the turn of my son to compete in his local league. For those parents among you, you'll likely resonate with the nerves of watching your beloved strive, sometimes successfully, sometimes not and struggle not to get too involved. I'll freely admit, that I'm not always at my best so sitting in a relaxed environment typing away may just help me, and him, relax. Let's see!
Onto the round-up and we have a great mix from the worlds of X and LinkedIn this week. Starting with the return of Formula 1—with a brilliant opening grand prix in Australia—and this fantastic geographical representation of the distances travelled over the year by Scott Barber. Thanks for sharing, Scott!
Keeping with the F1 theme and this wonderful small multiple from Marc Soares capturing the circuits that'll be used in the 2025 World Championship season. The red and black colour scheme is right on point!
It was an exciting weekend for Rugby fans with the culmination of the Six Nations Tournament. Four teams had the chance to win it as the competition entered its final set of matches. In this viz by Rob Taylor, he maps out the timeline of how each team's ranking changed as the matches progressed. England perhaps thought they had a chance to claim the title at one stage, only to be thwarted by deserving winners France. Rob brilliantly brings this to life with his design.
I just loved this when I saw it come across the desk this week. This post from SportsBall on LinkedIn shows a hand-drawn infographic being created. The creativity and storytelling are fantastic as the analysis is presented on the proposal to include a VAR/Hawkeye style overlay to an umpire pitch call in Baseball.
We now turn to BasketBall with a design by Georgios Karamanis who is looking at rivalries among the teams with this connected map view as part of the #30DayMapChallenge.
Lev Akabas returns with another brilliantly simple visual tracking the history of the 'triple-double'. As always with Lev, the clarity of the design is stunning and brings to life the story excellently.
We've seen a couple of fantastic vizzes from the world of the Power BI and #ironviz equivalent that'll be taking place at Microsoft's #FabCon. First up, Injae Park and this stunner of a design looking at brilliantly animated NBA analytical view which includes player profiles, shot plots and more!
And for those Rafa Nadal fans out there, Aanor Le Gouic has created a wonderful summary of the achievements by 'the king of clay'. Nadal's dominance at the French Open really is something to behold!
We finish this week with football and a great piece of analysis from Score. In this X article, each Premier League team is discussed and their stats of possession turnover are revealed. It's a short, but more than worthwhile, read.
Finally, I'd like to congratulate all of our sporting data vizualisation community who have both submitted and made it through to the longlist of the Information is Beautiful awards this year. There are so many fantastic entries that I wouldn't be able to do them justice here. Instead, I encourage you to check them out for yourselves. Fingers crossed for you all and the upcoming shortlist announcement.
Until next time, have a fantastic week everyone.
