Weekly Roundup 01.05.2025

Welcome to 2025 and a happy festive break & new year to all sports fans that managed to get some down time with family, friends and loved ones.

Over the december break we saw a dazzling display of talent and composure from Luke Littler clinching his first PDC World Darts Championship title defeating Michael van Gerwen 7-3 in the final. This historic victory not only crowns him as the youngest world champion in darts history but also signifies a transformative moment for the sport, capturing the attention of fans worldwide. A great start to the year .... bagging half a million pounds.

In the football world im eagerly awaiting the liverpool united game, after what hasn't been the best run for man utd in recent weeks. During the festive break i saw this post from Nungua highlighting across the premier league some pretty crazy stats from the last season and beyond.

Edmund follows these stats up by looking at team formations, stabilities and end results. Check out the different break downs for each team by month. Edmund highlights some interesting insights such as the highest stability going to Fulham with 89%

Have you seen what Mckay has been working on in the background? If not make sure you sign up to his newsletter for updates. More cool things coming up at PivotFootball.

The end of the year tends to come with some end of year reflections, so im pleased to see some personal running / activities coming through. 143 runs and 793 miles later, Adam closes out 2024.

Here's to Adam hitting 1000 miles in 2025.... what do we reckon?

Ksenia follows it up with 6 years of sport. This year being her highest number of activities in a calendar year at 297, mainly driven through a love of dancing and cycling.

Check out the explosion of marks and colour in the yaerly radials!

Scott closes out our self-reflective activities with this Strava best efforts graph. What better way to see how your stats are improving in some of the key distances than to have it graphed. It includes quite a ridiculously speedy sub 20 5k and a 1.33 Half marathon. Wowee.

Some attention now goes to basketball.

Gregg offers results, player stats and player details for Kansas. There is so much detail going on in this visualisation, and i can't quite believe how far some of the stats go back in years! Find out more around player numbers, height, game results, points and win %'s.

Lev creates wonderful sports visuals on repeat that he shares with the community but this one stuck out to me because it looks at age performance of players. I love the idea of peak performance too and who can sustain themselves at the top.

With this observable app from Saurabh you can start to look at different metrics across the season. I love the web based interactivity with it and how the highlighting gives the players face on the circles. Saurabh is kind enough to share the code in the thread.

Take a step into the mind of Krisztina as she shares the thought process behind her high jump and pole vault visuals in this scrollytelling visual. No doubt this will be a front runner for the information is beautiful awards?

Matt treats us to some abstract art this week looking at baseball MLB data. I can't quite comprehend how difficult this must have been to make in Tableau, very few can create stuff like this. I'm really impressed. The technical proficiency of Matts profile is top grade, hoping to see him dive into SportsVizSunday a little more moving forwards!

Naresh treats us to another design special of his in the land of F1. Quite honestly i'm surprised he isn't working for them yet! This time we are treated to look at Ross Brawns F1 story and the budget, spend and race wins that support it.

And no better way to start the new year than close this week off with a visual from our most active SportsVizSunday member Dan Wade. A beeswarm generated view of all 23,354 laps from the year. Can you recognise what some of the slowest laps will be without hovering?

Lastly, a general note. If you are ever lots for datasets on SportsVizSunday check out our repo. If you do venture across my personal website, all the resources are filed into folders on data and blog name.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend. It is the first touch of snow where I live, so a fresh walk hearing the crunch of the snow under the feet will be my plan over the next hour.

take care,

CJ & the #SportsVizSunday team
